Descripción general

The City of Newark is a longtime haven for immigrants, many of whom come from Africa and Central and South America. Today Portuguese and Spanish are widely spoken in the Ironbound, and ethnic markets, bakeries, restaurants, bars and social clubs line the streets of many wards.

Typical of immigrant communities, each generation faces tensions between assimilation and cultural preservation. Join our virtual conversation for a discussion of the immigrant experience and the impact of political, social and economic challenges on the development of cultural identities.

The PSEG Social Impact film is Immigration – Love Me and Finding Home, an episode of the Our Time PBS series that focuses on the experiences of first generation immigrants.

In partnership with Dodge Poetry, the program will open with poetry from Hugos dos Santos who was born in Portugal and grew up in the Ironbound.
