Newark artist Joanne Leone conducts a collaborative paint and weaving project inspired by MLK’s speeches, civil rights music and poems.

Keynote address by MaNishtana (aka Rabbi Shais Rishon), a blogger, playwright, novelist and congregational rabbi. The speech will be followed by
Freebird: The Early Life of Sarah Vaughan, a musical play that touches on career-defining moments in Vaughan’s early years, interspersed with jazz classics and songs from Vaughan’s repertoire.
Voting Rights and Music

The afternoon will end with a panel discussion on MLK’s contributions to the voting rights movement and the music that shaped the civil rights movement, moderated by Tierra Moultrie of the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice. Panelists include:
